MAJLIS BELIA MALAYSIA

THE ROHINGYA REFUGEES MUST BE CONTINUOUSLY SUPPORTED

Article by: Idzham Haqim bin Mat Rasid, Secretary of International Affairs & SDG Malaysian Youth Council (MBM)

Recently in the past week (April 2020) or so a Facebook post went viral containing a list of demands presumably by the leader of the Rohingya Refugee Association in Malaysia. The list included guarantee of work, a visa and so forth and soon after, it had been discovered that the post had been fake and was put up by an irresponsible individual. However, it did little to stop concerned Malaysians from voicing out their opinions regarding the matter.

Opinions were split between both camps where on one side, they condemned the demands and pushed for the refugees to return home and on the other, condemned the other side and pushed for the government to take care of the refugees. Unfortunately, a lot of unnecessary hate was fueling an intense barrage of inappropriate remarks thrown towards the already scrutinized community amidst an ongoing pandemic. The general concerns of Malaysians had possibly come from their negative experiences from the increasing influx of immigrants and/or during interaction with the community, we strongly advise against engaging in any racial harassment towards them seeing as to how we all need to stand together during difficult times.

The Rohingya refugee crisis is a humanitarian issue and aid should be given regardless of race, religion and nationality on the basis of compassion as it is our collective responsibility as a global citizen. Only after, should we then figure out the next best course of action while keeping the safety and wellbeing of these refugees in mind. In this context, the government and relevant NGOs must be on the same page in dealing with this crisis for the best possible outcome for all relevant parties. This pandemic leaves no one behind and some are more vulnerable than others therefore it is crucial that we extend our care beyond any social barriers.
