KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Youth Council (MBM) has called on the United Nations (UN) to play its role in protecting civilian lives amid escalation in conflict between Palestine and Israel in the Gaza Strip.
The council’s secretary-general, Hasnul Haniff Harun in a statement, urged for immediate UN intervention in the conflict and called for the international community to acknowledge and uphold the sovereign rights of Palestinians.
“MBM, representing the voice of Malaysian youths, calls for the immediate intervention from the UN to protect the lives of innocent civilians and play a proactive role to stop these attacks.
“The international community needs to recognise and defend the rights of the Palestinian people and sovereignty of their homeland as the Palestinian people have the right to live in peace based on pre-1967 recognised demarcations.”
He said human rights must be defended, especially that of women, children and senior citizens.
“We are also urging the world’s top leaders to continue to put pressure on the Zionist regime through consultation via UN diplomatic channels and express full support to the Palestinian people.
“The world also needs to acknowledge the tyranny of the Israeli regime against the Palestinian people that had occurred for more than 70 years which had been the root cause of the conflict, including the ‘Al Aqsa Flood’ attacks that happened recently.”
The conflict between Palestine and Israel intensified last weekend after Hamas’ military wing, the Al Qassam Brigades, carried out a complex attack targeting Israeli settlements near Gaza, where its army faced more than 5,000 rockets, catching the Israeli Occupation Army off-guard.
They were then joined by fighters from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and other Palestinian factions from Gaza who infiltrated the border areas and clashed with the Israeli Occupation Army.
The attack bore fruit when they took control of the Israeli settlements over the border.
In response, the Israeli Occupation Army launched ‘Operation Iron Swords’ against the Hamas groups.
