The Malaysian Youth Council (MYC) welcomes the announcement of an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, effective from midnight 28 July 2025. This significant agreement, facilitated by Malaysia under the stewardship of Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, marks a critical step forward for peace, security, and regional stability.
MYC commends the leadership and diplomatic efforts of all parties involved in achieving this pivotal milestone. Malaysia’s role as the current ASEAN Chair reflects not only its commitment to peace but also the strength of ASEAN Centrality in addressing regional challenges through homegrown mechanisms and dialogue.
This development is a clear demonstration of the enduring relevance of the ASEAN Way, a model of diplomacy grounded in consensus-building, non-interference, and mutual respect.
In the spirit of people-to-people solidarity, MYC is currently initiating efforts to engage with the National Youth Councils of both Cambodia and Thailand, underscoring the belief that sustainable peace must also be anchored in mutual understanding, youth cooperation, and grassroots diplomacy. We believe that youth organisations and civil society actors play a vital role in complementing government-to-government initiatives, ensuring that peace is not only declared, but also nurtured at every level of society.
MYC urges all parties to remain committed to their obligations and to resist any attempts to politicise this peace effort. What is at stake is not a matter of domestic political advantage, but the safety, dignity, and future of our regional community.
We reaffirm our position, peace is a shared responsibility and long-term stability requires inclusive, multilateral engagement built upon trust, cooperation, and mutual respect.
