Malaysian Youth Council welcomes Hamas-Israel ceasefire, calls for Gaza rebuild

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) has welcomed the Hamas-Israel ceasefire and called for swift and robust international support for Gaza’s reconstruction.

Its president, Mohd Izzat Afifi Abdul Hamid, said in a statement that humanitarian aid needed to be mobilised urgently to assist Gazans who suffered from over 400 days of Israeli hostilities since October 2023.

He urged the United Nations to deploy peacekeeping forces in Gaza to ensure the full implementation of the ceasefire.

“Such a measure would prevent any unilateral action by Israel that might undermine the terms of the agreement,” Izzat said.

MBM praised Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his exemplary leadership and tireless diplomatic efforts in engaging the international community to de-escalate the conflict in Palestine.

Izzat expressed appreciation for Qatar and Egypt’s crucial role in brokering the ceasefire.

Negotiators reached a deal on Wednesday for a ceasefire in the Gaza war between Israel and Hamas, an official briefed on the negotiations told Reuters, after 15 months of conflict that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and inflamed the Middle East.

According to Reuters, the deal, not yet formally announced, outlines a six-week initial ceasefire phase and includes the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian detainees held by Israel.

The agreement follows months of on-off negotiations brokered by Egyptian and Qatari mediators, with the backing of the United States, and came just ahead of the Jan 20 inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump.
