Over the course of last week, the Taliban had swiftly swept across Afghanistan in an effort to take control of the power vacuum in the aftermath of the United States’ overnight withdrawal. Panic-ridden Afghans tried to flee the country seeking asylum abroad with several western nations pledging to host Afghan refugees whilst an ongoing peaceful handover of power between the Afghan government and the Taliban was happening in the background.
Make no mistake, that the fear shared amongst Afghans of a Taliban rule are justified despite promising to carry out their duties in accordance to true Islamic teachings.
Henceforth, the Malaysia Youth Council (MYC) urges the Taliban to place the well-being of Afghans at the forefront of their leadership. The safety and security of Afghans especially the women, children and senior citizens are of upmost importance and their rights must be upheld at all costs. The Taliban must commit to their promise of freedom of the media, ending the war and grant amnesty to those who have cooperated with the occupying forces.
The MYC urges the Taliban uphold Islamic teachings and practice wasatiyyah (moderation in Islam) when leading the nation.
