Drag Israel To International Criminal Court - Abim PDF Cetak E-mail
Friday, 04 August 2006
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 (Bernama) -- The Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim) Wednesday called on the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to use Article 8 of the Rome Statute to drag Israel to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Abim International vice-president Azril Mohd Amin said under the provision, action could be taken against Israel including stopping its war crimes and pulling out its army from the region.

"Article 8 of the Rome Statute gives the court the powers to prevent war crimes, particularly when they were orchestrated.

"We see Israel committing orchestrated war crimes by occupying Palestinian land and encroaching on Lebanon. We condemn the Israeli aggression on innocent civilians," he said at the media conference on the Save Palestine Campaign by Abim and Global Peace Malaysia (GPM). Azril said the setting up of the ICC was endorsed by the United Nations at a conference in Rome, Italy, from June 15 to July 13 in 1998.

A total of 100 countries signed Article 8, and Israel was one of them, signing it on Dec 31, 2000.

Abim is demanding that the OIC use the legal provision to rescue the Palestinians and penalise Israel for its orchestrated war crimes.

Meanwhile, the GPM is getting ready to send humanitarian aid like foodstuff, basic items and medicines to the people of Palestine and Lebanon who are facing the zionist regime's onslaught.

GPM deputy president Nur Anwar Hashim said it had sent a four-member initial observation team to the region from July 22 to 30 to determine the situation there before sending the aid.

GPM is appealing to the public to contribute to the West Asia Conflict Victims Fund to facilitate the purchase of medical supplies, foodstuff and basic items.

The contributions could be made in three ways -- cash, cheque or money order to Account No: 564-221-611-602 (Maybank) under the name of Global Peace Malaysia or to Account No: 14-023-01-002922-4 (Bank Islam) under the name of World Peace Fund.

Contributions can also be made via short messaging service (SMS) by typing GPM for a RM1 pledge, GPM2 for RM2, GPM5 for RM5 and GPM10 for RM10, and send the message to 39111.

For those who want to make tangible contributions like medical supplies, they can contact GPM at Anjung Rahmat, Batu 6, Jalan Gombak, 53100 Kuala Lumpur or call 03-61888409 or email Alamat e-mail ini dilindungi dari spambot, anda harus menghidupkan JavaScript untuk melihatnya

Today's media conference also saw the launching of a documentary, "Visit Palestine", produced in conjunction with the Save Palestine Campaign drive.

The documentary evolves around the experience of a humanitarian activist Caiomhe Butterly, 24, who risked her life to champion the rights of Palestinians after the Israeli attacks on the town of Jenin in April 2002.

The book entitled "Abim dan Perjuangan Umat Palestin" written by Mohd Rumaizuddin Ghazali, was also launched at the same event today.
